Will a smart thermostat work with your system?
Tick the letters on your thermostat's wall plate. We'll tell you what kind of system you probably have and whether it's ready for a smart thermostat.
Pick up the phone and tell us what is going on. We will explain what we would check before anybody is booked in. Serving Inglewood and nearby.
What the letters mean
- R
- 24-volt power from the system's transformer. Sometimes split into Rc (cooling) and Rh (heating).
- C
- Common wire. Completes the circuit so a smart thermostat has steady power for its screen and Wi-Fi.
- W
- Calls for heat from a furnace or heater. W2 is a second, stronger stage.
- Y
- Calls for cooling (or for the heat pump's compressor). Y2 is a second stage.
- G
- Runs the indoor fan on its own.
- O/B
- Switches a heat pump between heating and cooling.
- Aux / E
- Backup electric heat on a heat pump, used when it can't keep up or while defrosting.
- L1 / T1
- Line-voltage (120 or 240 volt) wiring for baseboard or wall heaters. Needs a line-voltage thermostat.
Honest expectations
What a smart thermostat does — and doesn't
It can
- Run a schedule so the system eases off while you're out or asleep
- Let you adjust it from your phone
- Show you how long the system ran each day
- Remind you to change the filter
It can't
- Fix a system that's undersized, leaking or low on refrigerant
- Make a room warmer if the duct to it is crushed
- Promise a set saving — that depends on your schedule and habits
- Replace a yearly tune-up
